The Social Studio, based in Collingwood, are dedicated to improving the lives of young Australians who come from a refugee or migrant background and who may have experienced barriers to accessing education and/or securing employment. Using the vehicle of the fashion business, they provide education and work opportunities to create social change.
By assisting me in the manufacture of all of my beautiful clothing thus far, The Social Studio have been instrumental in helping me get my small start up business off the ground, for which I will be forever grateful for.
Below I chat with The Social Studio Production Manager, Luka Rey, about her role and some of the projects TSS has in the works at the moment.
At The Social Studio, our main goal is to create opportunity and a sense of belonging within the refugee and new migrant communities. We strive to offer a welcoming space and nurturing work environment, where people are invited to contribute their skills or develop new ones.
As Production Manager, I head a team of machinists and project manage all of our client orders, such as the beautiful collections from Duckling In Space.
The Social Studio is a very hands on workplace and every day is different. Depending on the projects at the time, I may spend my day on the tools, sourcing supplies or I might be production planning at my desk.
The thing that inspires me the most about being part of The Social Studio, is working towards a collective goal for the greater good.
At The Social Studio, our sustainable impact is a highly considered part of our practice. We are accredited with Ethical Clothing Australia and we encourage zero waste production. We are currently developing our own capsule collection using only dead stock and up cycled fabrics.
